pixivI've been getting quite a few questions lately, so I figured it would be easier to group them together.
I'd just like to point out that I am by no means a professional, nor do I have any sort of formal training in art; so if you come across something that makes you go "Hey that's not what I was taught!!! ", you are most likely right. I just like to draw, that's all.
Regular Questions: - I use Photoshop for filters and animating and Paint Tool SAI for everything else.
- I use mainly a single layer for coloring. I use plenty of layers for the sketch though..
- I use SAI's default brushes for painting. I occasionally tweak the brush shape and blending according to what I'm trying to paint at the time.
Questions regarding coloring: Huge chunk of text ahead. TL;DR at the bottom.
"So, how do you color?"
"Can you make a tutorial on how you color?" These are probably the most common questions I get, and they are the only two I don't know how to answer properly.
I don't know how I color. I just do. I observe the things I want to color, and I just play with the light. I don't know how to explain it. Since I'm still learning myself, I feel that I don't have any right to make a tutorial, which will probably be full of mistakes and odd habits that no one should ever pick up.
You're probably thinking something along the lines of "..Hey meanie if you don't want to share, just say so

"
It's not like that at all. I really don't know what I'm doing most of the time. I guess it's because so many people are under the impression that I (or anyone else for that matter) has some sort of magical coloring process that we're not sharing with the rest of the world because we're mean. Truthfully, (to me) coloring is simply about playing with light and being very observant. How realistic a piece can look is solely dependent on how well the artist observes and how much time they are willing to invest into it. People who prefer hyperrealism will obviously pay a lot of attention to minor details, and have the patience to slowly paint them out, while people who draw in a more stylized way (anime, cartoons, etc) may ommit certain details at their own discretion. Or course, experience and hard work will help the most of all.
I'm not saying asking is bad, (in fact, I welcome questions ;D ) but I realize that not many people ask good questions. "How do you color?" is a very broad question. I don't know how to magically impart everything I think I know into words. Perhaps there are people out there who can, but I'm certainly not one of them. I only know how to draw (I hope).
Try to be more specific. Narrow down what you like in a picture, and ask yourself why you like it. Most of the time, after thinking it over, you won't need to ask the artist how they painted/colored something, you'll realize how they did it yourself. Their work will speak for itself. You might not take exactly the same steps and get the exact same results, but this is art right? Isn't that part of the fun? Isn't the whole point of art to create, to show people how you see the world?
TL;DR Magic. That's how I paint.
If you have any other questions
apart from the ones already here lol , please don't be afraid to ask - I'll do my best to answer them

“Too many people grow up. That's the real trouble with the world, too many people grow up. They forget. They don't remember what it's like to be 12 years old. They patronize, they treat children as inferiors. Well I won't do that"
